Sustainable Picks from Nordstrom's Anniversary Sale 2020

Nordstrom’s Anniversary Sale starts today (August 19, 2020)! This annual sale is something shoppers and rewards-members look forward to all year long.

The question is: is it ethical to shop this big box store?

When you’re trying to shop more sustainably, it can be difficult to find a good one-stop shop for clothes. More ethical brands tend to have smaller batches and capsule collections. You might want one top from this brand, a sweater from another, and a pair of jeans over there. This is especially true if you’re trying to cut down on unnecessary clothing purchases. Whereas you might have filled your cart to get to the “free shipping” threshold before. Now that means paying for shipping each time (not to mention the environmental impact of packaging and shipping individual items.)

This is why finding retailers, online or brick-and-mortar, that carry multiple sustainable brands can be great for your wallet and the world. Nordstrom happens to have a pretty decent selection of ethical and sustainable brands to choose from. (You can grab a Sustainable Brands at Nordstrom cheat sheet below.)

If you’re looking to get some fall fashion deals but you also want to support more sustainable brands, look no further. Here are my 20 sustainable picks from Nordstrom’s Anniversary Sale 2020.

Tops

Jeans

Trousers

Jackets

Shoes

Those are my picks. If you’re ready to invest in a few new Fall Fashion pieces, I’d do it soon! At the time of this writing, there were already a lot of sold out items.

When purchasing something new, I like to ask a few things:

  • Is this similar to something I already own? Is it different enough to fill a need that my other items don’t fill?

  • Will it go with the rest of my wardrobe? Am I able to create at least 3 outfits using this piece and what’s already in my closet?

  • Do I love it? Is this a passing fad or is this an embodiment of my true style?

  • Is this item likely to be long lasting? Is it made of high quality materials that construction that I can trust? (As a general rule, more ethical brands tend to use longer lasting fabrics and reliable manufacturing processes.)

If you answered yes to all of those questions, then the item is likely a great investment!
